The Elephant in the Room

Elephant

Every day, over 6,000 Americans report being scammed in the crypto space, a number that continues to rise. Yet, only a fraction of these cases ever see any meaningful law enforcement action. Why? The system is overwhelmed, underfunded, and unprepared for the scale of digital financial crimes that have metastasized in the digital age.

To Illustrate The Magnitude Of The Problem, Let’s Look At The Data:

  1. Reporting vs. Reality

While 6,600 cases were reported daily in 2024, industry estimates suggest the actual number is closer to 105,600 cases per day. Why the discrepancy? Victims often feel ashamed, uncertain about where to report, or simply believe that law enforcement lacks the tools to pursue digital financial crimes effectively.

  1. Financial Losses Skyrocket

The financial impact of these crimes is equally unsettling. Total reported losses surged from $7.5 billion in 2020 to $66 billion in 2024 — a nearly ninefold increase in just four years.

Yet, these figures only account for reported losses. The true financial toll is likely far higher, considering the significant underreporting driven by fear, stigma, and a lack of confidence in the recovery process.

Case Study: The Surgeon And The Romance Scam

One of the most significant cases reported to Lionsgate Network involved a surgeon in Texas who lost $3.2 million to a romance scam. The scammer, posing as an attractive businesswoman, convinced the victim to “invest” in a lucrative crypto trading platform. The platform, of course, was fake. The victim was drawn into a cycle of escalating investments, each time believing he was closer to a massive payout.

By the time he realized it was a scam, the funds had already been moved through multiple wallets, obfuscating the trail. Despite filing a police report, the case was deemed too complex and outside the jurisdiction of local law enforcement. The scammer, meanwhile, had moved on to the next target.

The Reality: Organized Crime Is Thriving In The Digital Void

While law enforcement has struggled to keep up, organized crime syndicates have taken advantage of sophisticated technology to launder funds, conceal their locations, and scale their operations. For example:

  • Phishing Schemes: There are so many fake crypto exchange websites and wallet apps readily available that there are coordinated phishing campaigns to target Ledger, Coinbase, & Binance users.
  • Romance Scams: Tinder, Bumble, and LinkedIn are being abused so that victims are manipulated emotionally before a financial scam.
  • Fake investment platforms: There are new websites that pop up every day with “guaranteed returns” for crypto investments. They prey on the public’s desire for financial freedom.

What Needs To Change?

  1. Improved Reporting Systems: Law enforcement should develop improved reporting systems that connect blockchain analytics with the verification of claims and tracking of cash.
  2. Awareness Campaigns: Victims should understand that there is not a hopeless situation in speaking up — particularly about working with investigative groups and forensics companies like Lionsgate Network that can provide meaningful evidence to facilitate reporting.
  3. Joint Investigations: There is a need for federal and state agencies to narrow the jurisdictional gaps and coordinate efforts to address organized crime across national borders.
