A recent investigation has determined that different types of criminals have found a new way of obtaining your personal information without breaking into any computer network or system by purchasing it instead. According to KSL-TV, there are numerous apps, Web–based forms, and loyalty programs that allow people to input their personal information into those systems, but the data collected each day through those systems is being sold and re–sold to criminals.
The criminals can then use this information to create convincing scams targeting individuals and families throughout the United States. Bezalel Eithan Raviv, the founder and CEO of Lionsgate Network, states that increased access to personal information through the use of modern technology is driving the current trend of increasing criminal fraud and that if a criminal has sufficient personal data available to them, they can impersonate many companies, relatives, and financial institutions accurately.
Experts recommend limiting the amount of personal information you share online or through an application that requests access to your personal information, as well as remaining vigilant for any unsolicited calls or messages requesting personal information since this could indicate a scam.
The greater the number of personal data points available to a scammer, the greater the likelihood that a scammer will successfully defraud a victim. At present, it is possible for a scammer to purchase virtually all of the personal data that they could ever require.
