Instagram has rolled out a new location-tracking feature something many users might think is harmless or convenient. But cybersecurity experts say it could also give predators too much information.
In a FOX 32 Chicago report, experts caution that while sharing your location with trusted friends can seem useful, the feature might be misused by bad actors to monitor a person’s movements without their knowledge.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
-
Location data is sensitive. Even if a feature seems private, leaks or hacks can expose your whereabouts.
-
Be selective about who you share your location with. Features like location trackers can be abused if permissions aren’t managed carefully.
-
Regularly review app settings and permissions. Disable location sharing for apps you don’t fully trust.
-
Think twice before using location features for visibility turning them off doesn’t always mean your information is safe.
As always, staying aware and making careful choices about what you share digitally are key to protecting your privacy in a world where tech is increasingly powerful.
