Complaints about deepfake AI videos have more than doubled this year compared to last, according to FBI data. Experts are warning that these deceptive tactics are growing in scale and in danger.

Key people :

  • Dr. Rachel Goldman, assistant professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, whose image and voice were used without permission in a fake endorsement video.

  • Oprah Winfrey, whose likeness was manipulated in deepfake ads purporting to show her promoting a “pink salt” diet.

  • Gayle King, who spoke out against a video falsely showing her endorsing a weight-loss product.

  • Rep. Yvette Clarke , who has pushed for legislation like the Deepfakes Accountability Act to help regulate and mark AI-generated content.

  • Susan Jacobsen, an attorney specializing in defamation and data privacy.

  • Matt Swider, editor-in-chief of TheShortcut.com, who demonstrated how fast and easily deepfake videos can be made.

Highlights & Warnings:

  • Fake video ads are showing up, using AI to mimic real people making health claims.

  • The endorsement content includes using false credentials. For example, in the “pink salt trick” case, the deepfake content attributed to Dr. Goldman claimed she went to Stanford, which she did not.

  • Victims say it’s hard to get these videos removed from platforms, and that people are falling for them.

  • Experts suggest looking out for signs of manipulation: bad lip syncing, odd facial movements, unnatural speech patterns.

What’s being done:

  • Legislation is in motion. The Deepfakes Accountability Act has been proposed to require digital watermarking so people can tell when something is AI-generated.

  • The Take It Down Act is set to take effect next May, creating a 48-hour rule for platforms to remove fake content once identified.

  • Legal experts suggest documenting any deepfake you find (screenshots, recordings), in case you want to pursue takedowns or legal remedies.
