A Chicago-area man, Richard Lyons, says he was conned out of $10,000 in cryptocurrency after being lured by a scammer posing as Elon Musk. What began with direct messages on social media soon escalated into a fraudulent “investment” proposal from someone pretending to be Musk himself.
The scammer used fake pictures, voice memos, and even had Lyons’ caller ID display Elon Musk, adding layers of deception to the scheme. Lyons believed he was investing in Musk’s company. Over time, he saw his supposed investment “grow” on a realistic-looking website but when it came time to withdraw, the site vanished and so did his money.
