ABC News: FBI & Lionsgate Network Warn of Crypto Scams Targeting Seniors in South Carolina

ABC News report, South Carolina ranks 22nd in the U.S. for internet crime complaints, with reported losses hitting $146 million in 2024, a sharp increase of $27 million from the previous year.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center says people over 60 are most at risk, often targeted by crypto phishing schemes. Lionsgate Network, which works with federal agencies like the FBI, warns scammers are using AI to target retirees in both North and South Carolina.

Top reported cyber crimes by loss:

  • Business Email Compromise – $40.8M

  • Investment Fraud – $38.4M

  • Romance/Confidence Scams – $15.1M

The FBI urges people to stay alert: update devices, change passwords, avoid unknown links, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
