LinkedIn’s Trust Is Being Weaponized — Here’s Why It’s Time to Act

LinkedIn Trust

Over the past few months, we’ve seen a pattern emerge. And it’s one that should concern every executive, investor, and professional who relies on LinkedIn as a trusted space to build relationships and share ideas.

At Lionsgate Network, we specialize in blockchain forensics — helping victims and law enforcement trace and recover stolen digital assets. We’re in the trenches daily, seeing how fraud is evolving in real-time. But what we’ve observed recently is more than just the next scam trend.

It’s a shift in where fraud begins. And increasingly, it begins on LinkedIn.

The Case That Made It Clear

Just this week, we reviewed a $1.49 million crypto scam that started with a simple connection request. The victim, a professional based in California, was approached in November 2024 by a seemingly credible user named Martin Gao. Over several weeks, that contact evolved into a manipulated relationship built on trust, encouragement, and ultimately — deception.

The scam involved a fake crypto trading platform called Tucbit.com, with assets routed from Coinbase Wallet across multiple chains. After realizing she’d been defrauded, the victim connected with at least four other individuals — all approached through LinkedIn in similar ways.

Our team traced the funds across Solana and Bitcoin networks in under 9 seconds, identifying a rare laundering pattern involving Solana-to-MATIC transactions — a signature we’re now flagging in other cases under federal review.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t an isolated event.

In the past six months alone, we’ve tracked a 63% increase in crypto scams that begin with LinkedIn outreach. These aren’t the low-effort spam messages we’ve all seen — they’re socially engineered, high-touch, and designed to exploit trust.

What makes this especially dangerous is the profile of the targets:
C-suite executives, startup founders, venture capitalists, and high-net-worth individuals — the very people who rely most on LinkedIn’s integrity.

A Moment to Lead

LinkedIn has long been synonymous with professional opportunity and connection. But that trust — the core of its brand — is now being quietly weaponized by bad actors.

This is a moment not for alarm, but for leadership.

We’ve reached out to LinkedIn’s executive team with a proposal:
Let’s align. Let’s share intelligence. Let’s build lightweight, collaborative frameworks that allow LinkedIn to stay open, but not vulnerable.

Because the best recovery strategy is not needing one at all.

What Comes Next

As this issue gains traction, it will move beyond private reports and into public conversation. Journalists are already covering the rise of romance scams, deepfake impersonations, and the growing wave of crypto scam activity—and LinkedIn is becoming an unexpected part of that story.

We hope LinkedIn chooses to be part of the solution, not just the narrative.

At Lionsgate Network, our mission is to protect the digital ecosystem—and that includes working alongside platforms like LinkedIn to keep professionals safe, aware, and equipped to recognize suspicious behavior. With crypto scam recovery cases on the rise, especially those involving business professionals targeted through job offers, investment pitches, or networking messages, this moment calls for proactive defense.

If you’ve been approached, targeted, or defrauded through LinkedIn, you’re not alone. And it’s not too late to act. Whether your funds were stolen through phishing links or funneled into a wallet via fake crypto investment offers, our team is ready to begin the crypto recovery process with urgency and precision.

We’re here. We’re listening. And we’re ready to act—because every voice matters, and every recovery counts.
