Lionsgate Network experts have been involved in blockchain forensic analysis since the beginning to support clients on demand with the challenging task of crypto fraud. It has become clear over time that scammers have evolved their methods in their battle against trust and transparency. One of the latest—and most concerning—trends we’re seeing? Scammers are using artificial intelligence to fake their identity.
Today, cybercriminals have become more sophisticated by mimicking individuals, ranging from AI avatars and filters to deepfakes. These methods based on AI are particularly common within the cryptocurrency world, where thieves attempt to gain trust before they steal or deceive.
To all our partners, clients, and law enforcement allies: this is no longer a fringe tactic. It’s a growing trend, and it’s critical to stay vigilant.
Here’s How to Protect Yourself from AI Imposters:
- Ask them to hold their ID to the camera—deepfakes often struggle with real-world object interaction.
- Ask for a video call on an alternate device in parallel—AI fakes cannot readily have two convincingly live streams in tandem.
- Check social media profiles—check the symmetry of the face, varied backgrounds, and facial consistency in photographs and videos.
- Pose personal or emotional questions— models fail with sophisticated answers such as, “What is something that amused you recently?” or “What is an enriching experience that influenced you?”
Some Added Advice from Our Fraud Detection Specialists:
- Make them turn on their camera—they protest; that’s a warning sign.
- Tell them to turn their face sideways—AI faces usually struggle with side profiles.
- Ask them to put a hand in front of their face—AI tends to glitch with normal movements like this.
- Ask them to remove filters or backgrounds—impostors often use digital effects to hide their tracks.
And if they just vanish off the call when asked questions? That’s a win. You probably avoided a scam attempt. Hallelujah!
In an environment where fraud is widespread, vigilance is our best defense. Let’s keep on staying ahead, safeguarding our communities, and pushing back on the abuse of AI in fraud.
